April 2023
In 2022, our Managing Director, John, took on an ambitious running challenge that didn’t go quite as planned. With high hopes, he set out to test his endurance, but an injury, combined with a late return to camp after the cut-off time, led to disqualification from the event. Despite covering an impressive 100 kilometres over two days – ascending elevations that were equivalent to scaling halfway up Mount Everest – John was left with a lingering sense of unfinished business.
Rather than dwelling on the setback, John found himself reflecting on what he could achieve next. He knew he needed a new challenge to focus on, one that would push his limits even further and allow him to complete what he had set out to do. After several weeks of considering his options, John settled on an idea that felt both daunting and inspiring: running seven marathons in seven days, with the final marathon being the London Marathon.
The journey began on April 15th, 2024, in Birmingham. Each day, John ran a marathon along the Grand Union Canal, working his way toward the finish line in London. The challenge was tough, requiring not just physical stamina but also mental resilience. Yet, John stayed focused, taking each day as it came. On April 21st, he reached his goal, completing the seventh marathon by participating in the official London Marathon.
However, John’s motivation wasn’t solely about personal accomplishment. His primary aim was to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a cause that had become particularly meaningful to him. John had seen from afar how motor neurone disease had affected the life of rugby league legend Rob Burrow, as well as countless others each year.
Through this challenge, John was able to raise over £10,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. What began as a personal quest for redemption turned into an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating illness.
John’s journey shows how setbacks can be turned into something positive. By setting his sights on a new goal, he was able to channel his energy into something that mattered, not just to him but to many others. His story is a reminder that even when things don’t go as planned, there’s always a way to find purpose and make an impact – a philosophy we are proud to uphold at Whitestar.
