This year, Whitestar are proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone – 25 years in business.
From starting as a one-person operation in a spare bedroom to a thriving company of 40 employees and a multi-million-pound turnover, this is the story of how we got here – the challenges, the lessons, and the milestones along the way.
How it all began
In 2000, at just 23 years old, our founder, John English made the decision to leave a secure job, driven by the belief that he could do things better. With no business plan and no backup, Total Cabling Solutions was registered overnight.
One of his first big breaks came through a single Yellow Pages advert – one call that led to a project at the Royal Veterinary College. That early opportunity sparked a long-term client relationship that continues today, more than 20 years later.
Eager to grow in the education sector, John also mailed letters to over 3,500 schools and colleges. About 20 responses and six converted projects later, education became our first specialist sector – a foundation that remains central to what we do today.
Learning the ropes of business
The early years were all about learning. Every role was handled by John: selling, quoting, installing, invoicing, and managing admin. He learned everything by trial and error, from payroll to project management – often without guidance.
By 2008, he had achieved a six-figure turnover, hired his first employee, and gained NIC/EIC accreditation, allowing them to expand from data cabling into electrical work.
Growth, milestones, and a new name
From then onwards, growth never slowed. After 15 years, we hit our first £1 million turnover – a huge milestone and one we could only have imagined up until that point. Strategic acquisitions, including Cable Dynamics in 2018 and a second company in 2024, meant our team and offering continued to grow.
In 2020, we rebranded to Whitestar Solutions to reflect a broader vision and opportunities beyond cabling. Then, in 2025, we marked another milestone: our first £1 million single project – the Plowden Hub.
Our people and culture
People have always been at the heart of Whitestar. From our early days as a one-person operation to a team of 40, we have maintained a family-like culture built on hard work, loyalty, and pride.
We have a long-standing commitment to apprenticeships, welcoming three new apprentices each year since 2013 and helping young talent build lasting careers. Some, like Julio, have stayed long-term, progressing into leadership roles.
Resilience through challenge
Over 25 years, we have weathered major challenges: the 2008 financial crisis, Brexit, and the COVID-19 pandemic. During COVID, operations halted overnight, yet we adapted quickly – assisting universities with safe re-openings.
Our ability to endure and adapt has been vital in reaching this milestone. Only 4.5% of UK businesses survive beyond 25 years, and we are proud to be among them.
Giving back: charity and community
Giving back is integral to who we are. From Tough Mudder challenges to running seven marathons in seven days in 2024 – raising over £10,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association – we always try to do our part. The team regularly supports initiatives, from Macmillan Coffee Mornings to our 25-year anniversary charity calendar, celebrating staff while raising funds for good causes.
Looking ahead
Moving forward, we’re focussing on sustainable growth, more opportunities for young people, and even stronger leadership to ensure the company can continue to thrive.
We’re excited to find out what the next 25 years of Whitestar has in store for us.
A final few words
We could never be where we are now without the commitment and hard work of every person on our team. We want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you – here’s to the future!
